GUIDELINES
A. Description

The Center for the Humanities and Public Sphere will host a limited number of graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences for participation in a fall reading group moderated by Dr. Kristen Galvin, Assistant Director for Graduate Engagement. Over three virtual sessions, the group will discuss Katina L. Rogers’s new bookPutting the Humanities Ph.D. to Work: Thriving in and Beyond the Classroom. The book addresses contemporary topics of vital concern to humanities Ph.D. students including but not limited to graduate training, academic labor practices, career diversity, publicly engaged scholarship, and inclusivity and diversity in higher education.

This program is part of Envision Humanities: A Graduate Student Toolkit for the 21st Century.

B. Eligibility

To be eligible, UF graduate students must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in the humanities or social sciences.

Students must commit to participation in all three reading group meetings via Zoom. Each session will be approximately one hour long.

Reading Group Schedule:

Session 1: Wednesday, October 14, 4:00-5:00pm
Session 2: Wednesday, November 4, 4:00-5:00pm
Session 3: Wednesday, November 18, 4:00-5:00pm

C. Criteria of Selection for Participation

To facilitate in-depth and personal conversations, the group will have limited space. Should there be more applicants than the maximum number of participants, selection of students will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  1. Anticipated benefit of the reading group to the applicant’s professional interests in the humanities, and
  2. Considerations of composition of funded Ph.D. students from across disciplines.

C. Deliverable

Ph.D. students who participate in the reading group must submit a short reflection about their experience, within a week after the group’s final meeting.
